Lincoln Home National Historic Site

The Lincoln Home is a great starting point for your tour of Springfield. Visitors will get a look into the Lincoln family during the seventeen years(1844-1861) they lived in the house on the corner of Eighth and Jackson Streets, now located in the midst of a four-block historic neighborhood. Visitors will get a glimpse into Lincoln's life as a family man, as well as explore his rise as a successful lawyer and politician through the context of the Lincoln Home. Admission to tour the house is free, but tickets are issued on a first-come, first-served basis and often fill up quickly. Each tour is limited to 15 individuals. Pick up a ticket inside the Lincoln Home Visitor Center for the 20-25 minute tour of the home. Your tour of the only home the Lincoln's ever owned will be conducted by National Park Service rangers.

State Capitol Building

Watch Illinois politics in action, in this beautiful Renaissance Revival/Second Empire style building topped with a stunning 405-foot dome. All tours are free.

In 1867, the ground was broken on the current Illinois Capitol Building, with the first general assembly held there in 1876.  The capitol sits on the highest elevation in Springfield, and to this day, no structure in Springfield is allowed to be taller than its zinc-covered dome. The majestic French Renaissance style building serves as the center of Illinois politics and government. Spectators can watch the House and Senate proceedings from public galleries, see the Governor's office, visit legislative offices and learn about both the history and current use of the building.
