Campground Reviews

This is a really nice KOA, and the staff/crew/folks that work there are very friendly, and eager to help in any way. There's so much to see and do in this region of South Dakota, that it's impossible to see all the near by sites in just a few days. I'd say stay at this location for 1 week minimun, and that should give you plenty of time to see quite a few places of interest. But do stay here.

We’ve camped at several KOAs in their small cabins. It was a terrible campground. There was deferred maintenance in the cabin and in the bathroom building. Ripped screens allowed flies and wasps in the cabin, could see daylight through the walls. The worst part was that they were regrading the campground roads 15 feet from cabin- vibration, loud heavy machinery all day. Not peaceful! Do not stay

Clean level site with a picture perfect view. Great proximity to outdoor activities.

Beautiful resort, hosts very helpful and nice. Sights are to close together though and don’t care for the workers watching you to make sure your out by 11:00. They went by and stopped at least 4 times!! Even though we left on time!! But overall it’s a huge well talkin care of park with so much to do!! We came just before the park closes, so all the activities were closed! Thanks

This is a resort not a campground. We were there in late September and many amenties were closed for the season. Wasn't a problem for us but I imagine this place is busy in season! Its a beautiful park. Well kept. Restrooms/Showers were top-notch. Depending on where you are it can be a bit of a hike for the laundry. Staff was great. This is the nicest park we've stayed in.

Ok, check in was good. Had an issue with 30 electric. Watch dog said neutral and hot line reversed. Maitenance said many people stayed in site with no issues. They did move me but was taken back by response. These protectors we purchase have the less on them for a reason.

The showers are in need of some improvements, they were moldy and the shower curtains were ripped! Otherwise we love the park!!!

We were charged full price even though all the amenities were closed. We left 2 days early because the "campground" was more like a parking lot.

Wanted to extend 1 day & staff accomodated us very efficiently. Staff was very courteous, found some 1/2 price end of season Christmas Gifts :) close to Custer Park & Mt Rushmore.

We reserved a full hook up campsite. We got there. They gave us a campsite with no TV in the very back of the park why we were having a discussion about the site for other RVs pulled in and took the available spots that we were supposed to half

Wow! What a great park. We could only stat a couple of days and enjoyed every minute.

Beautiful, well-kept park with ALL the amenities. We stayed in a premium spot with a patio, table and chairs, firepit, and BBQ. It was level and clean with large grassy areas between each site. Great location for us to see Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park. Other than some loud neighbors using foul language and parking their UHV’s (4) on the lawn, it was a wonderful stay. Highly recommend.

Perfect location. Close to Mt Rushmore. Very quiet, very clean, large pull in spots for large RV’s pulling trailers.

Good base for our explorations of the area. Full range of activities for families. We found the shower size cramped and hard to put on dry clothes after showering.

Loved the stay at Mount Rushmore KOA Palmer Gulch. Lots to do for families. Very clean. Staff is friendly. Close to two state parks and Crazy Horse. Thanks we loved it.

Wonderful park, already planning on a return trip with the grandkids.

Was an excellent stay and the staff is very friendly and helpful

Very unhappy about the availability of toilets at tent site. Very far walk around RV sites to get to them. Although I knew water water not available at my site, I did expect a working pump somewhere nearby. This was not the case. The jets in the hot tub did not work. Other than that the facility was nice enough. Just didn’t impress me. Perhaps the previous two KOA stay were just above and beyon

Please clean the bathrooms and camping cabins better. Dead flies and bees in the windows and dirty slime on bathroom floors. Noticed 3 cleaning people went into a camping cabin for less than 1 minute ( that’s not long enough to clean out a cabin ) Otherwise - your KOA property is beautiful - very clean camp ground. Thank you

Campground is beautiful and close to everything. However, up to and including the first day of our stay, we got emails about all there is to do at this resort-pancake breakfast, chuckwagon, hot tub-etc. Nothing was open except the one restaurant by the office and they were out of a lot of their menu items. Didn’t expect things like pool to be open but to get emails the morning of and all closed

We called to confirm the bar and grill would be open when we made the reservation on line and we were told it was. When we arrived we were told it closed two days before. I reserved a pull thru site for a 36 ft 5th wheel and pickup with slides. the site was 40 ft long. when I asked where do I park my pickup I was told park it on the grass so we had no place to sit ouside. Won't be back!

Perfect location to Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse. Custer was a great small town. And lots of animals to see at Custer State Park

Clean and quiet park. Went in late September so most of the park activities were shut down. Biggest negative is when it rained our site was muddy with water pooling.

The Resort was very good, the only problem we had was the restaurants and stores were either closed or closed early. At check in we were told we could get pizza at the restaurant until 8PM, we went there at 4:30PM and all they were serving was ice cream and said they were getting ready to close for the season. No coffee or wine was available at the wine/coffee shop either.

We were very comfortable!

Very nice campground conveniently located to Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park plus the towns of Hill City and Custer. The only disappointment was that lots of options like the Peak Grill, swimming pools, hot tubs, horseback rides, etc. were closed for the season after Labor Day.

Great location

The WiFi at most areas in the park stinks! Don't claim to have WiFi when it only works in a few spots. I joined KOA but I have been disappointed so far. KOA's charge too much for what you get. We have no use for the playground equipment and pool but we pay for it. I doubt I will book any more KOA sites as we have found much better accommodations for less money in non-chain RV sites.

Nice facility, everything was shut down for the season, appears to be a great place for families. Disappointed that our site lock was canceled without our knowledge, after confirming it was still available when I changed dates

Loved it and we were there in the off season. Already planning a trip during the peak season

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The campground offers so many activities. The best part was being right around the corner from Mount Rushmore.

I was disappointed that most everything was closed. You have 3 laundry facilities and only one open, the park was fairly full. The one that was open was a mess 2 days in a row and busy. At check in the gentleman was nice but not very informative, about garbage, Wi-Fi etc. The escort was nice. The sites are small, very little space to park our truck, our TT is only 26’

They talk about the amenities and state several are closed after Labor Day. We chose the location because it had a restaurant and coffee shop and no where on the site did they say they were closed. Because we didn’t have a separate car to go find a place to eat, we were out of luck. Staff didn’t seem to care especially the gal with the nose ring and tattoos. No cell service and no cable TV

My experiences at KOA's have not been great...up until this point. We planned a Mt Rushmore trip, and I am 100% happy we chose the KOA to stay. 3 days and 4 nights. We went over Memorial Day weekend. You will get rain and some inclement weather. We packed most of our food, but we did partake in the pancake breakfast. Kid loved it. We rented a UTV for an afternoon for 2hrs. Worth it. You go on the back trails, and if you are adventurous enough, go on the gnarly trails too. You can drive UTV's on the open road here as long as yours is street legal with plates, I believe. This was the perfect base camp for the following activities in the area: Mt Rushmore, Bear Country, Keystone, Hill City, Rapid City, The 1880 Train (the train was ok, good for kids who haven't been on an old steamer.) The camp grounds themselves are great! Pool, shopping, horseback riding, little shops to visit. We made some really great memories here. Thanks, KOA! PS: Keep in mind, this area is 'Merica friendly...In other words, treat people right and you'll be treated right. Do not play games with the locals, the black hills are vast. Just sayin.

This campground is awesome for everyone. We have been coming here for 5 years now at least one time year usually in August. We have 4 kids from age 5 to 15 and they all love it here. It has 2 pools playgrounds volleyball horseback riding utv rentals bike rentals restaurants ice cream shop small store for groceries and camping stuff wine shop and the kids love to play with all the other kids there. We don't have a camper so we stay in the cabins and they work great for the 6 of us. They have multiple bathrooms and shower house throughout the grounds to use and a laundry mat there. We never had any problems staying here and will keep coming back every year. There is a lot of things to do within an hour drive also. I would definitely recommend this place for people with kids of all ages.
