U.S. Route 1 By Nancy Nelson-Duac A journey to be enjoyed bit by bit, U.S. Route 1 connects Fort Kent in Maine to Key West in Florida. Slightly unpredictable with city chaos and rural tranquility linked along the way, it is eclectic. From lobster melts and frosty root beer in the North to grits and Key lime fizzes in the South, the possibilities for fun are endless. For more than 2,400 miles it perseveres, sometimes losing it's name as it cuts secretly through a metropolitan area. Often in competition with nearby I-95, it remains a truly American journey. Remarkable not because it is a lovely thoroughfare, manicured and matching, but because it connects unmatching places each uniquely American.
