Manatee watching
Manatees, endangered sea cows, love to swim in our warm Gulf waters. We recommend a few good natural places to spot them!
- Manatee Par offers spectacular viewing of dozens of manatees. The park also has a visitor's center, canoe/kayak rentals, and fishing areas on the Orange River.
Directions: From Pine Island Center, follow Hwy 78 west all the way to I-75. Take I-75 South, over the Caloosahatchee River. Exit to Hwy 80. Follow Hwy 80 (Palm Beach Rd.) Northwest. The park is opposite the Florida Power and Light Plant, on the right hand side. Call 239-432-2004 for park info or call the manatee viewing update line at 239-694-3537.
- The Burnt Store Rd. This spot is not a public park, just a small piece of water on the back roads where you can see manatees in a natural habitat.
Directions: From Pine Island Center, follow Hwy 78 west, through Matlacha and off the island. The first stoplight you come to will be Burnt Store Rd. Take a left and follow Burnt Store Rd. to Ceitus. Follow Ceitus and take another left at SW 38th Place. Make a right on SW 4th. Follow the dirt road to the left. Please do not feed or disturb the manatees as they are an endangered species.
Sanibel & Captiva Islands

The beaches on these islands are world-renowned for their shelling and clear waters. The shopping on the island is just as famous. The islands are dotted with upscale specialty shops and small ice cream parlors. For more of an adventure, bring your bike. There paved bike paths that cover over 25 miles of the island.
