Local Area Day Trips

Tybee Island

Tybee Island, at the mouth of the Savannah River, is home to the original Tybee Lighthouse dating to 1733, one of the first public structures in the state. The island is fun to explore and its white sand beach is great for watersports of all kinds, with fishing from the pier and deep-sea charters available.

Jekyll Island

This island was once the playground of America’s millionaires.

Saint Simons Island

Excellent golf and tennis resorts abound at Saint Simons Island.

Fort Pulaski, Fort Jackson and Fort McAllister

Fort Pulaski, which stands on Cockspur Island at the mouth of the Savannah River, gives demonstrations of Civil War military life. Display and frequent reenactments at Fort Jackson, one of the oldest standing forts in Georgia, tell of the fort’s role during the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812 and Civil War. Fort McAllister, just north of Richmond Hill, is typical of Confederate earthwork fortifications. Artillery exhibits are included in the visitors center.

Hilton Head, South Carolina

Fort Stewart Museum

Fort Stewart Military Reservation showcases a large collection of military equipment from World Wars I and II and the Korean War.
