The Azalea Trail

Valdosta is known as "The Azalea City" for it's abundance of beautiful azaleas. The city's reputation for azaleas started with the work of R.J. Drexel, parks superintendent, who cultivated and planted azaleas on city streets, the cemetery, and at government buildings. He also encouraged residents to plant them by giving plants to homeowners. Drexel Park at the corner of Brookwood Drive and Patterson Street is named for him. A driving map of the most cultivated azalea areas in the city is available at the V-LC Conference Center and Tourism Authority. 229-245-0513
