"Every KOA has a personality, and we feel we're way out in left field," Ray joked, in describing all the fun and excitement their campground offers. The amenities include a 220-foot double loop water slide, an 18-hole miniature golf course, horseshoe pits and a 27-piece playground set with a nearby food stand. They also have two small lakes, with one catering to boats and fishing and the other designated for swimming. Their well-stocked KOA camp store carries 3,000 items, he added, in an effort to provide the "oddball things" as well as the basic staples that campers need. "In a 10-day period we sold 75 dozen eggs," Ray noted. "We offer convenience." The couple raised four sons during the years they have owned the campground, and all were involved in helping along the way, he added, with Bryan choosing to stay on. Ray said they rent "contraptions" which resemble bicycles and are fun to ride. The boats are also "contraptions" too. The swimming lake is spring-fed, and offers a soft sandy beach, which he drags twice a week. "The kids spend hours on the beach," he added. He commended the experienced, well-trained staff that offers great service to camping guests. They strive to accommodate special site requests and go the extra mile. Even in the off-season, the Crots are busy working on a Christmas card, which is a calendar that includes the events at the campground. It's mailed to 4,800 customers, and takes several hours to produce and mail. In addition to summer activities, they also schedule events for the spring and fall seasons, such as a classic car show and a Halloween weekend, with pumpkin carving, site decorations, costuming, a pet show and basketball shoot-out. They also produce a newspaper that is sent out to those who make reservations. The family traveled several years during family vacations, he said, visiting all 48 years. These days the couple is content to enjoy their favorite chairs in front of the fireplace, Ray added, and they spend a few days in Florida during the winter. Come meet the Crots Family. |
