Woodstock KOALocal Area Day TripsMount Washington Auto RoadThe Auto Road is a steep, narrow mountain road without guardrails. People not wanting to drive themselves can take a guided tour. Mount Washington Cog RailroadBoarding the Cog Railway to the summit of Mount Washington is like journeying back in time. Long before there were automobiles, or electric lights or telephones, the powerful steam trains of the Mount Washington Cog Railway climbed the highest peak in the northeast. This was the world’s first mountain climbing cog railway, and today it’s the only one still powered entirely by steam. Franconia Notch State ParkLocated in the heart of the popular White Mountain National Forest, Franconia Notch is a spectacular mountain pass traversed by a unique parkway which extends from the Flume Gorge at the south to Echo Lake at the north. Franconia Notch is the home of the famous Old Man of the Mountain, the same “Great Stone Face” immortalized by Nathaniel Hawthorne and Daniel Webster. Stop at the Flume Gorge Visitor Center and walk through the renowned Flume Gorge, ride the exciting aerial tramway at Cannon Mountain, and visit the New England Ski Museum. Take your time, stop for a swim at Echo Lake, net a trout while fly fishing at Profile Lake, ride your bike on the Recreational Trail, watch for rock climbers, hawks, and falcons on Cannon Cliffs, or hike on the Appalachian Trail. Crawford NotchThis 5,775 acre park provides access to numerous hiking trails, waterfalls, fishing, wildlife viewing, and spectacular mountain views. Crawford Notch State Park is rich in history with the famous Willey House. There are picnicking areas, parking for hiking, and scenic pull-offs. Conway Scenic RailroadAuthentic old-time train rides. Travel into bygone days in the comfort of either the open or enclosed restored vintage coaches pulled by either steam or early diesel locomotive. Enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the Mount Washington Valley and the surrounding White Mountains as you ride on either the one-hour roundtrip to Conway or the 1 1/2 to 2 hour roundtrip to Bartlett, New Hampshire.
