Local Area Attractions

Gila (Hee-La) Cliff Dwellings National Monument

The Gila Cliff Dwellings are well known. Within five natural caves there are 42 well-preserved rooms of stone and mud mortar that were built 800 years ago. A cool, shady, half-mile path takes you on a self-guided tour of the caves. These are one of the few Indian ruins you can still enter and are a wonderful experience for the entire family. It's a beautiful scenic drive through the river valleys and tall pines of the Gila National Forest to the Cliff Dwellings where you'll find a modern Visitors Center and numerous hiking trails. To really enjoy the mountains and Cliff Dwellings we recommend making a day of it and taking a picnic lunch. Open all year except for December 24th, 25th, and January 1st.

The Catwalk of Whitewater Canyon

Visit the unique Catwalk of Whitewater Canyon, a metal causeway that clings to the cliff walls of Whitewater Canyon about 20 feet above the creek. In some places the canyon is 20 feet wide and 250 feet deep. The original "catwalk" was a gravity-fed waterline that powered a mill at the mouth of the canyon near the present location of the picnic area. In 1935 the CCC replaced it with a sturdy metal walkway so visitors could enjoy this scenic canyon. It is now a National Forest Recreation Site. This makes a great day trip and we recommend having a picnic under the tall sycamore trees at the Catwalk picnic area. Open all year.

Silver City

Silver City is the boyhood home of Billy the Kid. Silver City is a blend of the old and new, the last of the frontier days and modern culture. The historic downtown district has brick Victorian homes and stores built in the late 1800's and early 1900's. It's charm and character has been preserved by our community's efforts. You'll enjoy a visiting to the Silver City Museum, Western New Mexico University Museum, and the galleries and shops. Silver City has been listed in the books, The 100 Best Small Towns in America and The 100 Best Small Art Towns in America.

The Village of Pinos Altos

Located in this little mountain community six miles from Silver City is the Buckhorn Saloon and Opera House where the flavor of the Old West is preserved. You'll have a great meal in a unique atmosphere. Melodramas are performed in the Opera House on the weekends during most of the year. You can also visit the Hearst Church, built in 1898 with money donated by the famous Hearst family. This unique adobe church now houses the Grant County Art Guild and an exhibit of horse drawn vehicles including the funeral hearse that carried Sheriff Pat Garrett.
