Sonnenberg GardensSonnenberg was the summer home of Frederick Ferris and Mary Clark Thompson. A legacy of an era of wealth and elegance, the estate was sold to the Federal government by Mrs. Thompson’s heir in 1930. In 1973, it was deeded to Sonnenberg Gardens, a not-for-profit corporation formed to restore the gardens and mansion to their former glory. At Sonnenberg Gardens you may stroll on your own, take a guided tour or come to enjoy one of the many events hosted throughout the year. There is also a wine tasting room. Genessee Colonial VillageSpend a day within a 19th century country village. As you stroll among the 57 restored and fully furnished buildings, you will see how a log cabin settlement grew into a bustling community of stores, shops, schools, churches and fine houses. Experience vivid impressions of 19th century American country life -- the aroma of soup simmering over an open hearth and bread baking in a brick oven, the ringing of the blacksmith’s hammer, the calls of barnyard animals -- and the friendly voices of interpreters and crafts people. Ganondagan - State Historical Native American SiteGanondagan State Historic Site is the location of a major seventeenth-century Seneca town and its palisaded granary. The town and its associated burial grounds on Boughton Hill were designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964. Fort Hill, the site of the granary, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966 because it was part of the French campaign of destruction in 1687. The Marquis de Denonville, Governor General of New France, led an army from Canada against the Seneca in July, 1687. It was an effort to annihilate the Seneca and eliminate them as competitors in the international fur trade. Granger HomesteadLocated at 295 North Main Street in Canandaigua. Completed in 1816 by Gideon Granger, Postmaster General under Presidents Jefferson and Madison. As one of western New York’s finest examples of Federal architecture, this restored home is noted for unusually detailed hand-carved woodwork and many of its original furnishings. Carriage Museum featuring fifty horse-drawn private and commercial vehicles. Finger Lakes Performing Arts CenterConcerts of all kinds performed here. The Wizard of ClayThe Wizard of Clay Pottery complex is housed in seven geodesic domes, designed and built by master potter Jim Kozlowski. The complex spans more than 20,000 square feet, and includes production facilities and retail stores where his works are displayed for sale. Their workshop is open to the public during store hours, 9-5, seven days a week. You may see pots being made and trimmed on the potter’s wheel, pottery pieces being glazed or special pieces being imprinted with real leaves (in season) and later burned away. In most cases, you can talk to Jim personally as he works, and he’s always glad to explain what he does and answer your questions. Letchworth State ParkEvery year, over one million visitors come to the park and traverse the extensive trail system to experience the breathtaking gorges and colorful fall foliage.
