Biosphere Reserve

In 2004, the eastern coast of Georgian Bay was designated as a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, a United Nations Agency. This special area contains the largest archipelago (group of more than 30,000 islands) in the Great Lakes and is unique throughout the world. The shoreline ecosystem has been identified as a globally important natural area for all to enjoy. In Canada, Georgian Bay is one of 13 Biosphere reserves and one of 482 in the world. This world wide designation celebrates our local priorities and achievements, the value we place in our natural, historic and cultural resources, as well as our commitment to conserve and foster these resources for future generations. Come see for yourself, we'd love to have you!
