Local Area Day Trips

South Dakota State Capitol - Pierre

The Capitol was built in 1910 and recently restored to its natural beauty. It is on the National Register of Historic Places. Art murals and sculptures make it a must to see!

National Guard Museum - Pierre

See Custer’s dress sword, a Civil War vintage field gun, World War I machine guns and a World War II Sherman Tank, an A7D aircraft and much more.

South Dakota Discovery Center and Aquarium - Pierre

Intriguing and just-plain-fun for all ages. Based on the “please touch” learning concept, the ground floor is decked with colorful displays and aquariums. The gallery area is full of hands-on exhibits and non-traditional science displays. Visitors can experience the universe through astronomy in the Sky Lab planetarium, or test their reflex skills in the reactionary car.

Triple U Buffalo Ranch

Located 25 miles northwest of Pierre on Historic Highway 1806. Experience the film “Dances with Wolves” firsthand with a visit to this 53,000 acre ranch. Over 3,000 buffalo roam the world’s largest privately owned buffalo ranch and award winning film site.

Akta Lakota Museum - Chamberlain

Boating and Jet Skiing - Chamberlain

Heritage Center at Red Cloud Indian School - Pine Ridge

The Heritage Center at Red Cloud Indian School features a collection of Native American art that is one of the finest in the Northern Plains. The Center also displays a fine collection of traditional artifacts, including two Sioux beadwork collections gathered on the Pine Ridge Reservation between 1885 and 1930. These collections are supplemented by a display of contemporary beadwork and porcupine quillwork done in recent years by Sioux artisans.
