The Apache Trail arose at an intersection on an unpaved stagecoach trail. The Trail was named after the Apache Indians who originally used it to move through the Superstition Mountains. In the 1880’s gold was discovered. A mining camp grew at this intersection. The camp became a town and was named Apache Junction from the name of the Trail. It has a colorful history in the west involving Native American cultures, Spanish conquistadors and superstitions regarding the "Lost Dutchman's Gold Mine."
