Old McDonald's Farm

In 1986, “The Farmer's Wife”, Nancy Robbins, founded Old McDonald's Farm as a way to contribute to the family's income while also being home with her then small children. Nancy, being raised in the city of Watertown herself, had a vision to provide an opportunity for the non-farming public to experience first-hand the joy of the country, animals and agriculture.

Today, Old McDonald's Farm has set the stage for an educational, agricultural, hands- on adventure for “kids” of all ages! At Old McDonald's Farm, they take pleasure in providing kids and kids-at-heart with opportunities to learn about and have fun with agriculture. Indian River Lakes Region

Indian River Lakes Region

The Indian River and the 18 lakes in its watershed occupy an extraordinary landscape of rocky, wooded uplands and teeming wetlands, lakes, and waters. Sitting astride the rugged, geologic backbone of the Frontenac Arch connecting the Adirondacks to Algonquin Park in Canada, the Indian River Lakes and neighboring Thousand Islands share a vital confluence of pathways for migratory birds and one of the most diverse habitats for wildlife in the northeast. The Indian River Lakes Conservancy was created in 1998 to preserve, protect, and encourage the sustainable management of these uniquely valuable water, land and biological resources for the benefit and enrichment of future generations. This remains our abiding purpose and commitment.

Greenwood Creek State Forest

Greenwood Creek State Forest

The 1009-acre Greenwood Creek State Forest is one of the 43 state forests in St. Lawrence County. There is a 1.8-mile Nature Trail that loops around in this state forest. The nature trail includes many points of interest, including a bubbling encased spring.

The trail traverses through a red pine plantation into hardwoods, then skirts the border of a hardwood forest and red pine stand showing the distinct characteristics of each forest type. The trail then drops into the lower elevations of the forest before it again climbs into the hardwoods, where it follows rock ridges along which raspberry, blueberry, and shadberry (also known as juneberry and serviceberry) patches are found. From the ridges, the trail descends into a spruce–fir wetland area, following a small brook for approximately 500 feet before the trail completes the 1.8-mile loop and ends back at the picnic area.

Greenwood Creek State Forest also offers a 1/4 mile nature trail that leads to an observation platform overlooking a wetland habitat through which Greenwood Creek flows.

Natural Bridge Falls

Natural Bridge Falls

The Natural Bridge Falls are actually an unnamed group of waterfalls located on the Indian River just outside the hamlet of Natural Bridge.  Depending upon who is counting, there are four or five waterfalls here.

To get there, locate Natural Bridge on NY 3, between Carthage and Harrisville.  There are four streets in the hamlet which take you south off Route 3.  Depot Street is the east-most of these.  As you proceed out of the hamlet, the road will curve and you will come to an intersection.  The North Croghan Road will be on your right and the Slye Road on your left.  These falls are to the east and north of this intersection.

International Maple Museum Centre

International Maple Museum Centre

Those who founded this institution set out to collect the tools and equipment used to make maple sugar and syrup from the earliest times to the present. The core groups were, and still are, from Lewis County, but several others from across the maple region also joined in creating this repository of artifacts and written documents.

The American Maple Museum was founded in 1977 to preserve the history and evolution of the North American maple syrup industry. The American Maple Museum is a non-profit organization chartered by the NY State Board of Regents and is recognized by the North American Maple Syrup Council and the International Maple Syrup Institute.
